Critical Social Network Analysis as a Method for Examining How Power Mediates Improvement Efforts

Alternate name

Chapter 17

Abstract/Description

In the sections that follow, we describe the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of SNA [social network analysis] as it has been used to study educational improvement efforts. Next, we discuss the roots of critical social network analysis (CSNA). Then, we present our two examples showing how CSNA can be used as a method for examining how power shapes social interactions and thus mediates educational improvement efforts. We conclude the chapter with implications for scholars of educational improvement and offer a set of guiding questions for CSNA applications.
