Chapter 6
Abstract/Description
William R. Penuel and Vanessa Roberts’s chapter explores how concepts and practices of democracy and community can guide the emerging field of improvement research in education. The chapter examines the democratic roots of participatory approaches to both innovation and research, including participatory design and participatory action research. The chapter then examines how concepts and practices of community can function as resources for change efforts that resist social reproduction while working partly inside and partly outside existing institutions that are targets of those change efforts. Finally, the chapter examines how these concepts can inform not only the means but also the ends of improvement research in education and proposes that we use these lenses to evaluate the success of improvement research and approach questions of sustainability of improvement research.
