Shaping the School-wide Learning Environment Through Supervisory Leadership

Abstract/Description

The supervision of teachers and the instructional program has been a central responsibility of building‐level school leaders since the nineteenth century when the role of principal first emerged. This chapter describes supervision in the broadest terms, suggesting that supervision includes a full array of leadership and organizational policies and practices intended to support and improve a school's teaching and learning environment. It then offers a framework, together with the related literature, that captures key aspects of an effective school‐wide learning environment. The chapter proposes that there are two primary dimensions to the school‐wide learning environment: the learning climate and the instructional capacity. Reflecting on the learning climate and instructional capacity research to enhance teaching and learning conditions in schools, one particularly potent theme comes through that has strong implications for a school's culture. The chapter elaborates these implications in detail.
